EPISODE 02 / FREE LESSON
SaaS ideal customer profile
Who Should This SaaS Actually Sell To?
An ideal customer profile is a testable choice about where to focus. Use Taploop to compare plausible segments by problem urgency, product fit, access, and evidence instead of building a broad fictional persona.

THE GROWTH QUESTION
Unclear ICP
A useful ICP tells you who to prioritize now and what evidence could change that choice.
What you’ll learn
- Turn a broad market into comparable segments.
- Use customer evidence to score fit.
- Choose a narrow initial segment without claiming certainty.
BEFORE YOU START
Bring the evidence you have.
- Product capabilities and important limitations
- Customer interviews, support notes, or sales conversations
- Candidate segments and current alternatives
- Team capacity and sales constraints
Use information you have permission to share. If a data source isn’t connected, provide a relevant export or ask Taploop to work from the evidence available.
WORK THROUGH IT WITH TAPLOOP
From question to a testable plan.
- 01
Define comparable segments
Ask Taploop to describe three candidate groups using company type, relevant role, recurring situation, and current workaround. Avoid categories such as “all small businesses.” Each segment should be specific enough to recognize in a real conversation.
- 02
Score the evidence
Compare urgency, ability to benefit, ability to pay, and reachable channels. Attach supporting quotes or records to each score and mark unsupported assumptions. A segment with attractive economics but no customer evidence should remain a hypothesis.
- 03
Interview for a decision
Choose the leading segment and draft a short interview guide about recent behavior, costs, and alternatives. Review recruitment and approve outreach separately. Decide in advance what evidence would strengthen the choice or make another segment more promising.
MAKE IT YOURS
A prompt to try with Taploop
Add your company’s context and supporting evidence, then use this with your AI agent connected to Taploop.
Using our product details and customer evidence, compare three possible ideal customer profiles. For each, specify the role, company context, urgent situation, existing workaround, and route to a conversation. Show evidence and uncertainty beside each score. Recommend one provisional focus and an interview guide that could disprove it. Do not invent customer facts or contact people without approval.
YOUR EXPERIMENT BRIEF
One segment, five learning conversations
Adapt this proposed test to your company. Set the baseline and decision rule before launch.
- Hypothesis
- The chosen segment repeatedly experiences the same costly problem and has a plausible path to buying.
- One action
- Seek five approved research conversations with people who meet explicit segment criteria.
- Measure
- Count independently reported recent examples of the problem, existing effort or spend, and willingness to take a concrete next step.
- Review window
- Recruit and interview over two weeks.
- Decision rule
- Narrow or revise the profile using repeated patterns. Five conversations are directional evidence, not a market-size estimate.
Review the audience, message, owner, budget, and measurement plan. Publishing, outreach, and spending require your approval.
THE FOLLOW-UP
The real-world experiment
The featured company and experiment are still to come. When this episode is produced, this section will include the starting point, the approved action, and a follow-up with measured results.
